Some researchers have used the word mirth to refer to smiling and laugh- ter, which are facial and vocal expressions of the emotion rather than the emotion itself, and therefore should be kept distinct. In one study of four- and five-year-old nursery school children, those who were rated by their teachers as being more likely to initiate humor in interac- tions with peers were found to have more advanced language skills and were rated by their mothers as having a temperament characterized by greater activity and approach, rather than social withdrawal (Carson et al., 1986).

According to the article, humor is a powerful teaching tool that can create a positive “emotional and social environment” in which students can lower their defenses and focus more on what is being presented.1 Garner also says that humor can “initiate and sustain student interest” as well as improve students’ divergent thinking and memory of the topic presented.1 While there are many benefits, the use of humor when teaching a lesson can also have its down sides.
