Listening Outline to be read while music is heard L; CHOPIN, Prelude in C Minor for Piano, Op. 28, No. 20 3. This oboe was purchased new in 2005 and is a great find. The brass section remains seated just like it is in the symphony orchestra. By the end of the century a division into four parts had become standard: first and second violins, violas, and cellos, with the double basses playing the cello part an octave lower. (Not until the 19th cent. did the cellos and basses frequently have different parts to play.) Woodwinds appeared in the earliest orchestras, though infrequently and subordinate to the strings—usually two oboes and a bassoon, with flutes sometimes replacing the oboes.

The kortholts have a doubled back bore, similar to the dulcian family but narrow and cylindrical rather than larger and conical, and are therefore shorter in physical length but longer acoustically, allowing a lower range extension of four or five notes below the corresponding size of krummhorn or cornamuse.

Some early bands in the 1920s and '30s, most notably that of Paul Whiteman, included it for coloristic purposes. This Fox professional oboe was new in 2010. He switched to saxophone for a time to play in a number of dance bands in the Colorado area.
