Indeed, Mozart’s mighty woodwinds would become the birthright of Beethoven, Wagner, and Schoenberg. The bore of the instrument became narrower and more highly conical, the tone smaller but much more complex and reedier, with distinct quality and dynamic differences among the low, middle, and high registers. We have a variety of types and styles of pads to accommodate all of the players’ needs. Modulating away from the tonic key is like visiting: we may enjoy ourselves during the visit, but after a while we're glad to go home.
