The top graph is the pattern of a wave whose length is twice that of the flute (2L, say), the second has wavelength 2L/2, the third 2L/3, and so on. This distorts the opening inside of the mouthpiece function of the reed. However, in the second movement, we see the bassoons joining the oboes as a four-part reed choir.
